Variety Pak began in 1967 as the brainchild of Steve Filippini.  The Pak bought a bus and toured around the country.  Over the years, they’ve played throughout the Inland Northwest, and dozens of Spokane area locations including the Coeur d’Alene Hotel, the Moose, Eagles, and Elks Lodges in Spokane, CenterStage, the Officer’s and N.C.O. clubs at Fairchild, and The White Cotillion Dance at the Spokane Club.  They played WSU and Idaho dances, New Years Eves at the Spokane Country Club, and they started the first Friday afternoon tea dances at the Davenport Hotel and played there for three years.

They disbanded in the 80s, but in the early 90s, as big bands tended to subside, Steve, Kyle and Marvin rekindled Variety Pak.  After a lifetime of entertaining in Las Vegas and Hollywood with great singers and significant bands, Bruce Davis joined the Pak along with Jeri Brown, who moved to Spokane from California following many performances with the Woody Herman band.  In the fall of 2012, Bruce passed away and the band has carried on in his spirit.

5 piece dance band

Variety Pak

Songs from the 1920s through the 1980s

Bruce Davis,

The Spirit of
Variety Pak

Welcome to Variety Pak, a 5-piece dance band that guarantees you and your guests will experience a cornucopia of composition, a riot of rhythm and a saturation of song.  Five professional musicians provide a Variety of song sets from the 1920s through the 1980s.  Dixieland, big band jazz, country, pop:  just a few of the styles we master.
And dancing!  Our specialty. We play for many of the dance clubs in the inland Northwest and people have a hard time staying in their seats.  West and East coast swing, Fox Trot, Waltz, Two Step, Rock, ballads and blues...and all the Latins, from Tango to Samba, from Cha-cha to Mambo and beyond!

The versatility of the group is mirrored by the multi-faceted talents of its members.  The core group consists of five professional and seasoned musicians:  Keith LaMotte, trumpet, Leslie Ann Grove, trumpet, Nick Herman or Clint Perry, guitar, Kyle Pugh, bass, and Tom Shager, drums.  All of them sing as well.
Depending on the gig and other factors, Variety Pak may also select subs who are just as talented.  These subs include Chris Moyer and Craig Catlett, woodwinds, Bruce Pennell, bass, Eugene Jablonsky, guitar, Tom Hill and Tom Molter, brass.
All of these musicians are not only highly trained professionals, but virtuosi on their own instruments. And most of them have taught and trained the musician/students of our region.
